What is genocide? Why does it happen? What can be done to prevent it from happening again?

At the end of the Second World War, with the establishment of the United Nations, the holding of the Nuremberg Trials and the adoption of the Genocide Convention, the international community assured itself that genocide would never happen again. But never again has become a meaningless phrase.

This book asks why. It also asks, what is genocide? Where has it happened in the past? Who is being threatened by genocide today? And what can we do to prevent this terrible crime from recurring?

Providing an overview of the history of genocide worldwide, this revised, expanded edition helps readers answer these questions. It brings them up to date with recent events—the killing of the Rohingya in Myanmar, the persecution of the Uyghurs in China, the broader recognition of the genocide of Indigenous Peoples, the resurgence of fighting in Darfur, and the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. It examines and elucidates the debates and controversies surrounding the use of the term genocide as well as the reasons for the common response by individuals, governments and the United Nations — denial.

The text presents background information on the genocide in Darfur then vividly describes other genocides throughout history. It also discusses in more general terms the responsibility governments have to curtail human rights abuses. The author's biases are evident throughout (some of her language verges on propaganda), but the book gives an impassioned overview of a timely topic. Source notes are included. This disturbing history of mass ethnic killings across the world examines the why, when, where, and how genocide takes place--that's a lot for one small book. But in a lucid, informal text, Springer ably documents particular crimes against humanity, including the transatlantic slave trade, the slaughter of America's Native peoples, the Turkish massacre of the Armenians, the Nanking massacre, the Holocaust, and the Khmer Rouge slaughter in Cambodia. She connects those horrific crimes with each other and also with the recent massacres in Rwanda and with what is happening in Darfur, Sudan. Neither sensational nor generic, this sturdy title in the Groundwood Guide series includes meticulously documented notes, a bibliography, detailed time line, and a list of organizations to contact for more information. A fine resource for Holocaust and genocide curriculums, and as a discussion starter on the topic of human rights.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2006, American Library Association.)

Gr 7 Up-These handy volumes address current topics that can be debated in government, history, and science classes. The first chapter frames the question and the remaining ones provide historical background, explanations, and possible solutions (note in "Genocide" that Wounded Knee took place in 1890, not 1891). The authors express strong viewpoints that are sure to jolt readers into ready agreement or opposition. Springer begins with Todays Genocide and a summary of what is happening in Darfur. Tanaka argues that global warming is affecting people across the globe, with worse yet to come. These concise, straightforward titles are important additions to all collections."Patricia Ann Owens, Wabash Valley College, Mt. Carmel, IL"
