Gr 5-8-A standout for its organizational format, which will help readers grasp the spiritual and worldly aspects of each religion. Marsico treats the religions and their followers respectfully and examines their historical and contemporary cultural influence. Themes and student inquiry are emphasized, with four chapters that describe each faith's history; geographic origins and expansion (geography); structural organization, sects, and spiritual tenets (civics); and funding and financial support (economics). Sidebars ask -developing- and -concluding- questions and encourage readers to make inferences and draw conclusions. A -Celebrating Faith- chart lists holy days, rituals, and festivals. The photos and maps are of average quality. VERDICT Consider to help middle schoolers grasp the far-reaching influences of religion.

Grades 4-7 Though well behind other religions in terms of number of adherents, Sikhism is nonetheless the fifth-largest religion in the world. This slim book manages to pack a good deal of information into its pages as it introduces a religion most American studentsor American adults, for that matterknow little about. The book begins with the religion's origins, in the Punjab region of India. Two large faiths inhabited the area, Hinduism and Islam, but neither appealed to Nanak (14691539), who believed in keeping God close, working hard, and doing good deeds. Though rituals are not a big part of Sikhism, common customs include men refraining from cutting their hair, and wearing turbans. Studded with useful color photographs, this title in the Global Citizens: World Religions series also offers thought-provoking talking points and does a good job of dispelling misconceptions.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.)
