Two degrees of separation

Ronnie, M.F.A.
Langsdale U. poster girl for diversity Veronica Williams just lost out on a coveted summer teaching position. Instead, this West Coast transplant finds herself spending her nights at a factory job and her days in search of her writer's voice--until she meets a brother not of the fraternal kind, which is hard to do in this white-bread, ivory tower town.

Doris, Ph.D.
Brooklynite Doris Weatherall hadn't expected this kind of turbulence when she landed that sought-after summer teaching spot--but then she met her class of surly high school seniors prepping for freshman year. Her love life isn't exactly a smooth ride, either--somehow her East Coast sophistication has gotten her involved with an ambiguously gay professor, and a tie-dye-wearing, free-loving computer techie. Were it not for fellow misfit and best friend Ronnie, navigating campus life in the Midwest would be more fiasco than fun.

Doris and Ronnie are outsiders at Indiana's Langsdale University. Quirky Doris is nervous about teaching a summer class of low-income college students. To make matters worse, she has to co-teach with goofy Zach, a guy she regrets hooking up with once upon a time. Ronnie would have loved to have the co-teaching position with Doris, and she is furious that Zach was picked instead, leaving her with no university employment for the summer. She reluctantly takes a job working nights at a local factory and attends classes during the day. She does manage to snag the attention of the handsome guy she has been admiring from afar, but she soon learns that he is not being totally honest with her. Doris has a similar problem with a charismatic but sexually ambiguous poetry professor. Readers will enjoy the novel setting and the trials and tribulations of transplanted big-city girls trying to find work and love in the Midwest.
