This centennial edition of Emily Post’s classic guide to etiquette has been completely rewritten with up-to-date and comprehensive advice on the need-to-know manners, customs, and best practices of today.
For the past one hundred years, Emily Post has been America’s definitive source for how to navigate—and enhance—every social interaction. In an increasingly diverse and intersectional world, the need for a trusted primer on how to put people at ease and treat others with confidence and kindness has never been greater.
Lizzie Post and Daniel Post Senning—the great-great grandchildren of Emily Post and co-presidents of The Emily Post Institute—provide a fully updated and relatable guide. From advice on entertaining, table manners, and using titles and pronouns, to personal and professional communication etiquette, this stylish and essential reference provides thoughtful guidance on how to do it all well. Rooted in a foundation of consideration, respect, and honesty, this edition continues the Post family legacy of upholding traditions while moving forward with the times. The book covers:
  • Etiquette classics like table manners, gift-giving, thank-you notes, greetings and introductions, and everyday conversation
  • How to be a good host and a good guest, from handling invitations and setting yourself up for success to plus-ones and dealing with mishaps
  • Tech etiquette including video meetings, parties and classes, and how to politely handle devices, home security, and AI
  • Managing hard times, from what to say (and what not to say), to the tradition of condolence notes and how to offer support following a death, miscarriage, or tragedy
  • Tipping practices in the age of rideshares, tough times, and ever-prominent payment screens.

  • This book also includes handy reference guides for each chapter that make it easy to find the Posts’ most searched for content, like a gender-free attire guide, a soup-to-nuts entertaining chart, sample invitations, and more.
With Emily Post's Etiquette, The Centennial Edition you’ll have everything you need to build successful relationships in all aspects of life as you move through your world with confidence and ease.

Emphasizing consideration, respect, and honesty as the heart of contemporary American etiquette, Emily Post's great-great grandchildren Post (Higher Etiquette) and Senning (Manners in a Digital World) offer appropriate 21st-century etiquette advice. At 416 pages, this tome focuses on entertaining and daily behaviors, including greetings, conversations, correspondence, personal appearance, table manners, misfortune, entertaining, daily public activities, tipping, tech use, and gifting. The chapters range from nine pages (defining etiquette) to 69 pages (on conversation, correspondence, and invitations) and include tables and charts; easily accessible reference lists; and words and actions to avoid. There are many helpful real-world examples, such as how to appropriately refer to people who are transgender or nonbinary. The chapter on table manners includes prayers, toasts, table settings, American and Continental European utensil use, and multiple courses. In a major change from previous editions, some topics (weddings, business, attire) are barely mentioned or have been moved to specialized website articles or entirely separate books. There is no formal bibliography, but the acknowledgements include a brief list of additional reading. VERDICT This 20th edition of the famous guide celebrates Emily Post's life and contributions to American etiquette. Most likely to interest those active in American high-society gatherings and organizations, etiquette classes, and classes on how to be more gracious--Laurie Selwyn

In 1922, socialite Emily Post's Etiquette in Society, in Business, in Politics, and at Home was an instant best-seller, as readers from all levels of society responded to her common-sense, clear advice on how to conduct oneself in almost any situation. This centenary offering from Emily's great-great-grandchildren seeks to guide readers through digital-age social minefields and conundrums. Common courtesy and concern for the well-being of others have always been basic tenants of Post-generated advice, and these remain at the core of the conversational essays (including reoccurring characters like ""Ms. Outta Line"") that consider aspects of social interactions. Some of the language has been updated to include terms like inclusivity and representation, but the gentle admonitions that steer readers towards becoming members of the ""Best Society"" concentrate on sharing, caring, and taking care of one other--timeless advice for any age. The Post dynasty remains the go-to resource for advice on everything from tipping to what to wear to a ""dressy casual"" event, so most libraries will want to consider this current edition.
