Bestselling author Isa Chandra Moskowitz shows you how to create your own vegan meats, like deli slices and ground beef, that will satisfy every craving

âIâm an animal lover and that love doesnât end when I get hungry. Do I miss meat? Not really. But hereâs what I do miss: Aromas. Experiences. Methods. Traditions.

âI remember all the tastes and sensations from my omnivore days, even though they were so long ago. My grandmotherâs meatballs, burnt on one side. Slurpy seafood pasta at a café along the bay, my teeth scraping against the hard oyster shells. My favorite pizza burger from a diner underneath a Midtown office building, the feel of the vinyl seat as I bounced with excitement at the sight of the melty mozz arriving at the table.

âThese are the moments you could say I miss. Maybe you do, too. But we donât have to.â
âfrom the Introduction

Fake Meat is packed with 125 recipes that will satisfy every kind of meat craving, from a vegan Philly cheesesteak and a basket of wings to a rich, gooey lasagna.

Restaurateur, prolific vegan cookbook author, and former host of the Post Punk Kitchen public-access cooking show, Moskowitz dives into the plant-based meat trend with her latest title. While grocery stores are full of meat alternatives, Moskowitz provides readers a myriad of options for avoiding these store-bought products. Recipes are big on comfort and cover everything from snacks and sandwiches to Sunday feasts. "Hot Takes" gives readers a wide variety of tips from using leftovers to sourcing ingredients. It's important to note that most recipes are two-fold and require cooks first prepare the fake meat or dairy and then use that to complete the main dish. Moskowitz even includes a chapter on proxy dairy products, which is a welcome addition. This cookbook will be a welcome resource for the vegan and vegan curious who aren't satisfied with commercial substitutes and are looking for fun vegan recipes. VERDICT Vegans looking to start from scratch and create homemade meat and dairy alternatives will be impressed by the wide variety of plant-based options found here and will enjoy the many comfort food staples.--Sarah Tansley
