In this new edition of 2010's Growing Tasty Tropical Plants in Any Home, Anywhere, readers of all skill levels are encouraged to try growing something edible in their own home. The authors, owners of Logee's Plants for Home & Garden in Danielson, CT, offer ample information about germinating 46 plants indoors, including orange, lemon, guava, olive, and sugarcane. Ideal conditions, care, and potential problems are all presented in an attractive, easy-to-use layout that's complemented by appealing photographs and drawings. Most plant information is supplemented by a practical application of the harvested fruit or spice. Readers are treated to recipes for drinks and sweets, plus directions for processes such as roasting coffee beans, fermenting chocolate nibs, and preparing peppercorns. The book describes everything needed to succeed. For example, there are details about selecting the right container, watering schedules, fertilizing, and more. Daunting topics such as pruning and propagation are explained clearly, and a troubleshooting guide provides useful guidance if problems arise. VERDICT This is an extraordinarily helpful guide for indoor plant enthusiasts of all levels. Highly recommended.--Anitra Gates

First published in 2010 as Growing Tasty Tropical Plants in Any Home, Anywhere, this guide to container gardening teaches readers how to grow an array of foods inside their own homes. Laurelynn and Byron Martin cover mostly fruits but also coffee, tea, chocolate, sugar, and spices. With illustrations and close-up photographs of plants along with a list of growing conditions, care, and potential problems for each plant, this book is perfect for beginners as well as more experienced gardeners looking to know more. (The authors highlight plants that would be especially good for beginners.) Adding to this book's appeal are recipes for some of the plants included: pink grapefruit granita, calamondin orange marmalade, and Logee's Australian finger "lime-aid." The authors wrap up with a troubleshooting guide to plant care and additional resources to consult.
