A kitchen witch with a penchant for baking and a (literally) cursed love life meets someone who’s worth breaking a hex for in this enchanting romance debut written with a heap of spice and an equal measure of heart.
“A spicy, spellbinding debut that is as swoony as it is sweet, this book is a cottagecore rom-com of magical proportions.”—Lana Ferguson, author of The Nanny
“Pure magic.”—Jenna Levine, author of My Roommate Is a Vampire
“A cozy delight!”—Lyla Sage, author of Done and Dusted

As a skilled kitchen witch, Dina Whitlock knows her way around a pastry recipe. In fact, she runs her very own London café, serving magic-infused treats to her loyal customers. She is not as much of an expert on romance, thanks to the hex hanging over her head. It’s hard to fall in love when your partner is cursed with a string of bad luck. But who needs love when your best friend is getting married, right?
Scott Mason has returned from global travels thrilled to embark on his new role as a curator at the British Museum. Having left London two years ago to recover from a devastating breakup, Scott has missed out on a lot. With his best friend’s wedding approaching, and Scott as best man, this is his chance to make up for lost time. Little does he expect to be enchanted by the magical maid of honor.
During a romantic weekend filled with a peculiar hedge maze, palm readings by candlelight, and a midnight Halloween ritual, there’s no denying the chemistry between them. But the hex still holds, and Dina knows that Scott is in danger of more than just bad luck—because she’s falling, hard. Will Dina be able to undo the hex before it’s too late?

In El-Fassi’s sizzling debut, a café owner and a museum curator find love despite a curse. Witch Dina Whitlock spends her days infusing magic into the pastries she serves at her London bakery, Serendipity Cafe. Haunted by a hex that threatens harm to anyone she falls in love with, a consequence of a spell she cast on her ex-girlfriend that backfired, Dina sets love aside and conceals her witch identity. Enter Scott Mason, a curator at the British Museum. Though he’s not looking for a relationship after a devastating breakup, when he comes into the café, he’s immediately enchanted by Dina. The pair are thrown back together on a train ride to the wedding of mutual friends, who, in a matchmaking effort, assign Scott and Dina to the same cabin. The close proximity heightens their sexual tension and despite Dina’s reservations, their connection deepens. But the more she comes to care for Scott, the greater risk she puts him in. El-Fassi prioritizes her leads’ steamy physical connection, somewhat sidelining the emotional bond. Still, the characters’ complexities propel the story forward. Readers will be charmed. Agent: Maddy Belton, Madeline Milburn Agency.

Ferne Marks and Owen Hall make a perfect pair depicting the electric chemistry between a kitchen witch and the charming man who catches her eye. Ever since Scott Mason stumbled into Serendipity Cafe in London, he's had the barista on his mind. Dina Whitlock was just as taken by Scott and is startled to discover they're both attendants in their best friends' country wedding. Marks narrates with passion, performing Dina's warring attraction and fear that an ex's hex spells danger for Scott, while Hall conveys Scott's intense longing for Dina. Both Hall and Marks narrate with rich British accents, shifting into Moroccan, Welsh, and American to capture secondary characters. A cozy, bewitching romance--listen with a cup of chai and chocolate croissant close at hand. E.E.C. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine
