These guides open with key sites not to miss, which are invitingly arrayed in color photos and short captions outlining the reasons they are iconic. Each book's introduction offers an overview of the locale, including its history, geography, topography, climate, economy, and environment. Last is a focus on food and drink, highlighting specialties. The main body of each book is focused on walks and tours, each with a list of highlights, an explanation of the route, its length, its ideal duration, an inviting narrative introduction to the trip, and occasional sidenotes about the area's cultural or artistic qualities. The information on every stop is enough to suggest why readers might want to go, but once there, readers will have to rely on local information and other travel guides to gain context. Directions for traveling between stops are bare-bones, and drivers new to the area will have to rely on GPS or more detailed print maps. VERDICT Filled with images and smartly organized, these guides offer great days out for locals as well as intriguing travel planning for sightseers who are going further afield. This series will be welcomed by anyone planning a trip to one of the areas it covers.
