Sisters Monnie and Lynette have decided to move with their widowed father from Edinburgh to a Scottish Highlands village where he'll be warden of the local youth hostel. The young women quickly establish themselves in the small community. Lynette finds a job as senior receptionist at the town's hotel and captures the attention of both the manager, Ronan, and its chef, Scott. Meanwhile, Monnie serves as the assistant warden at the hostel and becomes involved with fisherman Torquil, who has a reputation about town. Even their father begins a romance, with the shopkeeper Ishbel. Their transition to this idyllic setting seems to be going smoothly when all three are faced with challenges that threaten their happiness. Even with an implausible plot twist and a pat ending, Scottish writer Douglas, author of The Melody Girls (2010), crafts another embraceable romance of love and community.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2011, American Library Association.)
