In Bringing Up Beauty, Elizabeth had her heart broken over the lab puppy she raised for - and returned to - a guide dog program. In A Different Kind of Beauty, she's trying again. But this time, she vows, she won't fall in love. She'll have fun, sure, but she won't surrender to those big soulful eyes and goofy puppy love. Hmmm... is it Beauty II she's resisting, or Scott, the former" boyfriend who just keeps hanging around?

Gr 7-10-In this sequel to Bringing Up Beauty (Stoddart, 2000), Elizabeth Kerr, a freshman, is raising another future guide dog. Kyle, 16, is blind due to diabetes. Although the two attend the same high school, they have never met. Elizabeth struggles with having to give up Beauty, and Kyle struggles with his recent loss of sight. At the same time, they must deal with typical adolescent concerns: unrequited love, family, and friendships. The teens meet as the story draws to a close, and Beauty becomes Kyle's dog. Both character development and the action successfully move this novel forward. The protagonists' stories parallel one another, and each has a distinct voice that conveys both angst and perseverance. Excitement builds with a refreshing unpredictability that lasts until the final page.-Leigh Ann Morlock, Vernonia School District, OR
