A "comprehensive...must-read" (Sara Gottfried, MD, New York Times bestselling author of The Hormone Cure) guide to women's health from naturopathic physician, bestselling author, and leader in women's health Dr. Jolene Brighten.
When discussing period pain or mood swings, hormonal imbalance or fertility issues, and all the "down there" concerns, vagina owners everywhere consistently ask their doctors one thing: Is this normal?

Whether it was from her patients or her hundreds of thousands of social media followers, Dr. Jolene Brighten has heard this simple question more times than she can count. With only eighteen states (yes, really) requiring medically accurate sexual education, it's no wonder that so many have serious questions that need answers.

In Is This Normal?, Dr. Brighten "answers to the often unasked questions along with actionable steps on how to move forward...It's like having a conversation with your most trusted friend...one that happens to have a medical degree" (Dr. Will Cole, New York Times bestselling author of Intuitive Fasting). TMI isn't a term in her world. She answers all those "lady parts" questions you've always wondered but might not have felt comfortable asking, including topics as wide-ranging as the menstrual cycle, postpartum health, libido, acne, the orgasm gap, and vaginal discharges. No topic is too gross, gooey, or OMG to be off-limits.

Featuring a twenty-eight-day plan to take back your cycle and dozens of charts, checklists, and diagrams that help keep it real while keeping you educated, Is This Normal? is the Our Bodies, Ourselves for the social media generation, and women everywhere will benefit from this honest, easy-to-understand guide to their bodies.

Naturopathic endocrinologist Brighten (Beyond the Pill) provides an approachable manual for women “about what your sex ed teacher should have said but didn’t.” Surveying medical and social science about sex and menstruation, she stresses that “whatever feels good to you and makes you happy is your normal.” She answers common questions she hears from patients, counseling that giving consent is always reversible, masturbation is a “totally normal part” of adult life, and that the size of one’s clitoris likely isn’t related to orgasm frequency. Pushing back on myths about the menstrual cycle, she notes that only 13% of women have a precise 28-day cycle and that having sex on one’s period is safe and can actually alleviate cramps, stress, and headaches. To help readers “optimize” their hormones and maintain menstrual health, Brighten outlines a 28-day program that matches dietary and lifestyle recommendations to the phases of one’s cycle. Her tone is compassionate yet authoritative, even humorous at times (“Biologically, the female body has evolved to orgasm—Mama Nature knew what she was doing with this one”), and her keen attention to the different ways people relate to their bodies will appeal to those who feel overlooked by similar volumes. The result is an inclusive and thorough overview of women’s health.

Naturopathic physician Brighten (Beyond the Pill) is trained in clinical sexology and sexual counseling. She offers women an accessible guide to their bodies in this book. Noting that female anatomy and physiology are not well studied in medical schools and even mostly missing from standard anatomy textbooks, she explains the basics. The book covers sexual functioning, hormonal cycles, and a 28-day program for improving health through diet and exercise. She empowers readers by giving them permission to explore their bodies and enjoy the wide variety of sexual practices available. Brighten explains which hormones interact and regulate bodily functions and provides advice to relieve symptoms such as hot flashes and premenstrual discomfort, while discreetly promoting her own website and line of supplements. She also discusses sexually transmitted infections, diabetes, and thyroid problems and encourages readers to see health care providers when the symptoms appear. VERDICT A good addition to women's health and consumer health collections. Readers wanting more scientific information will want to pick up Vagina Obscura by Rachel E. Gross.--Barbara M. Bibel
