The authors' approach to understanding invasive plants is primarily designed as an identification guide for 250 species across the United States and Canada. Plants are defined broadly and include both terrestrial and aquatic species, from trees to grasses. Species information includes identifying characteristics, habitat and range, effects on the ecosystem, history of introduction, and management strategies. Three short chapters precede the identification guide and discuss the history and processes by which non-native species become part of the ecosystem; the politics and costs of eradication; and management practices. This work is good for readers who want an overview of invasive plants across North America, including identification down to the genus level, and the history, impact, and management of invasive plant species. For identifying individual species, state and regional identification guides are a better choice, and the open access work, Invasive Species in Forests and Rangelands of the United States (Poland et al., 2021), offers greater coverage of the ecology, impacts, and practical tools for management of invasive species, albeit with the limitation of including non-plant species.
