Fan favorite recipes and brand-new classics from this Los Angeles–based vegan Mexican eatery for discerning cooks of any level.

Women-owned and 100% plant-based, Sugar Taco is an LA go-to for Mexican food, for good reason. Founders Jayde Nicole and Nia Gatica Campos, along with chef Alan Campos, launched Sugar Taco in 2019 with a vision for a women-owned business that championed traditional dishes in an eco-conscious and animal-friendly way. They ditched meat and dairy for juicy jackfruit, perfectly seasoned seitan, house-made queso, and more, and then paired this on-trend menu with vibrant Dia de Muertos–inspired decor. The restaurant has been thriving ever since, with two locations and a third in the works.

Sugar Taco at Home makes it possible for readers to bring the restaurant experience home. From Sugar Taco Carne Asada and meaty Mushroom Enchiladas Verdes to Tofu Chilaquiles and a deluxe Tres Leches Cake, this book is essential for regulars of the LA restaurant, as well as vegans, vegetarians, and flexitarians craving easy, homemade Mexican flavors.

In their first cookbook, the team behind Los Angeles taco chain Sugar Taco (model and activist Nicole and chefs Alan and Nina Campos) share the secrets to their success delivering sustainable plant-based Mexican food that can be recreated in the home kitchen. "Saving the world one taco at a time" is the vision of vegan friends who dreamed of sharing their talents and principles without losing the flavor or fun. Their meatless bases and various salsa and crema recipes are the building blocks for creating a variety of mouthwatering Mexican classics like al pastor tacos and chicharrones. Bright food styling and page layouts reflect the restaurant's design aesthetic and true-to-their-message "Cook with Compassion" vignettes share the ethics of cooking without animal products. Readers may be annoyed by the book's organization, as key recipes for meat substitutes are buried in the side dishes chapter, but a well-placed bookmark solves the problem. Fun, approachable, and faithful interpretations of taco shop classics for all levels of home chefs. VERDICT A true reflection of the Sugar Taco brand provides the home chef with conscientious, earth-friendly, and delicious vegan Mexican food.--Sarah Tansley
