Binding traditions • Deidre Brown (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Kahu) discusses her part in the ground-breaking, Indigenous, historical research that is Toi Te Mana – how art and architecture, both always considered integral in Māori creative practice, have, since the late 1930s, become decoupled and seen as separate disciplines. Farm implements • Andrew Barrie contemplates the place of the prosaic and the messy in architecture as he navigates the confluence of old and new comprising Waimea Nurseries’ staff and administration facilities, designed by Irving Smith Architects.
The craft of layering narrative • Trudie Bradbourne explores the layers of cultural history embodied in Te Whare Hononga, in Ngāmotu New Plymouth, by Tennent Brown Architects.
ALAN McCORKINDALE • A senior interior designer at Jasmax in Wellington, Alan McCorkindale is passionate about human-centred workplaces that create a positive impact on people’s daily lives.
2024 New Zealand Architecture Awards • This year’s New Zealand Architecture Awards jury was headed by Caro Robertson, principal of Spacecraft Architects. Robertson was joined by Ari Stevens of Athfield Architects, Julie Stout of Mitchell Stout Dodd and guest international juror Patrick Kennedy of Kennedy Nolan in Melbourne, Australia.
