At the start of Hill’s uneven second Kit Doyle thriller (after 2015’s If Anything Should Happen), the Sacramento, Calif., crime blogger and radio talk show cohost and her husband, Richard, with whom she’s on the verge of splitting, go to a farmers’ market. There Richard confides that his 17-year-old niece, Jessica, whom he hasn’t seen in 15 years, has gone missing, and he introduces her to the girl’s mother, Sarah, who’s selling organic plums at a booth. Kit turns for help to former cop John Paul Nathan, who tells her the farewell note that Jessica left Sarah is identical to ones left by other missing teens. Sure this is no coincidence, Kit decides that the only way to locate these kids is to pose as a runaway. Readers will admire the chutzpah with which the 27-year-old finagles her way into a teenage cabal bent on misdeeds, but the disjointed plot doesn’t do justice to the intriguing setup. Trying to rebuild her life after the shocking events recounted in If Anything Should Happen, Kit Doyle is determined to make her marriage work. She discovers other young people have gone missing in recent months, all penning the same memo. The youths are connected by their ties to a controversial psychologist who treated them at a camp when they were in their early teens. No one wants to believe children are capable of murder, but anyone can kill when pushed to the edge. VERDICT Kit is a flawed individual whose weak spots spur her to help others. Her determined pursuit of the culprit results in a roller-coaster ride of suspense that will attract Erin Hart enthusiasts.

Crime blogger and radio-talk-show host Kit Doyle has covered some gruesome events during the course of her career, but her new case hits very close to home. A 17-year-old girl named Jessica has disappeared, leaving a note that says, I love you. Goodbye forever. Jessica is the niece of Kit's sort-of ex-husband, Richard. She is the only child of his late brother, Mick. The girl's mother, Sarah, is strangely uninterested. Richard asks Kit to help, and she feels obligated to do so. With the assistance of radio colleague and former police detective John Paul, she discovers a tough-love camp for disturbed teens run by a sinister psychologist who refuses to provide information. She then decides to go undercover as a teen runaway, putting herself in danger as she enters the world of shelters, runaway families, and a clan run by a very nasty psychopath.
