      The enigmatic loner known as Driver, introduced in 2005’s Drive, takes to the road again after two thugs assault him and his fiancée on a Phoenix, Ariz., street in this terse, brutal, poetic, perfectly wrought sequel. Maybe Driver is paranoid, but is it really paranoia when one team of hit men after another track you down and try to put you on ice? “Two cars this time, and they’d waited for an isolated stretch of road. Chevy Caprice and a high-end Toyota.” Sallis once again pays homage to the tight behaviorist style of French noir master Jean-Patrick Manchette (“he felt the trachea give way and fold in on itself”) and the bleak existential world of criminals beloved by fans of the films of Charles Bronson and Alain Delon, not to mention the passionate cult following for the 2011 film version of Drive. As is the case for all such episodes in the life of the stoic driver, you can come into this excellent novel cold, strap in, just hit the gas, and go. Author tour. A stunt driver for movies, Driver finds more excitement as a wheelman during robberies, but when a heist goes sour, a contract is put on his head and his survival skills burn up the pavement.       Drive is his name, and driving is his game. If he had any sense, he'd stick to that exclusively, but sense isn't a commodity readily available to the denizens of the noir underworld, where Drive solidly resides. So, in addition to doing a little movie stunt work and driving the getaway car for a couple of well-planned heists, Drive gets in over his head in a botched job that ends in predictably dire consequences. To the accompaniment of a terminally wounded saxophone, the book also includes a few offhand but pungent observations regarding the "dog of the American Dream gone dingo." Sallis is a "writer's writer," but a few oblique references to Huckleberry Finn and a Robert Frost poem shouldn't deter anybody from enjoying this straight-ahead example of noir at its pulpiest best. Sallis, author of the acclaimed Lew Griffin series, lives in Phoenix. Recommended for all public libraries with an audience for noir. -Bob Lunn, Kansas City P.L., MO

      Sallis has a bloodhound's nose for noir. Whether in the celebrated Lew Griffin novels or in his several stand-alones, his characters are always trapped--trapped by their inability to effect change in a malign world, trapped by their own character flaws, trapped by the wrong girl, trapped by walking into the wrong place at the wrong time. Sometimes they know they're trapped, and sometimes they are the last ones to know, but Sallis always knows; he can smell it in their pores, and he makes us smell it, too. So it is with Driver, the antihero of this quintessential noir novella about a loner with a passion for driving fast cars. He's a Hollywood stunt driver by day and a getaway car driver by night, but he has no interest in either movies or crime: he just wants to drive. Life won't let him, of course, and eventually he figures that out, as he sits in a Motel 6 near Phoenix, "watching the pool of blood lap toward him." Sallis shows us how he got there in one crisply written, spot-on scene after another. At one point, near the end of the book, Driver reflects that we neither choose our lives nor have them thrust at us. Instead, "they're forever seeping up under our feet." You won't find a better definition of the noir worldview than that, and you won't find a more textbook example of how to express that view in fiction than in this hypnotic little story about driving circles around your life.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2005, American Library Association.)
